Thanks to a lot of the Big Bang Theory, our children are obsessed with the idea of attending Comic Con in San Diego. Aidan asked me if we could go to San Diego this summer when we are home. I explained to him that it’s an additional 6 hour flight on top of the 8 hours it takes for us to get home to Boston. With all the flying he does, that actually didn’t deter him. That being said, I assured him that some day, we WILL go to California and see all the sights he is dying to see, including hopefully one day attending Comic Con.
I figured that day was wayyyyy into the future. I most definitely didn’t expect that we would be attending our first Comic Con here in the Netherlands! We didn’t really know what to expect as Josh and I have never been to the original one ourselves but had a vague idea based on tv shows. There was a list of guests on the website, the majority of which I had either never heard of or I would consider to be more B list actors. There were a few that we were interested in seeing, such as Black Canary from Green Arrow. Unfortunately, she cancelled. As did any of the other A list people. It’s my understanding that this was the first year of Dutch Comic Con so perhaps that’s the reason why there wasn’t a huge star following there. Not to mention, California is really where it all is.
Regardless, Josh, Aidan, Batman (I mean Liam) and I made our way down to Utrecht, a city about 30 minutes south of us to go to the Jaarbeurs Center (where we also attended Lego World this past fall) where Dutch Comic Con was being held. The kids eyes immediately lit up when we entered Dutch Comic Con and they saw not just people dressed up as their favorite characters but things like the DeLorean (car) from Back to the Future and the Batmobile.
We wandered for a few hours, picking up a few tsochkies here and there. Of course, they wanted everything. There wasn’t much for them to actually do while we were there. They weren’t interested in standing in line for autographs or pictures, they were more just fascinated with their surroundings than anything else. And of course, with the costumes. Liam was the only one of us that actually got dressed for the big event – these are his peeps 😉
The consensus among us is that for the first year, this was a pretty good show. And that we are going to attend again next year as I guess it was a raging success and they will be returning for the next 5 years. And Aidan has even said he’s going to dress up – now that’s a huge step!
