Like Liam’s trip to Legoland, I’m far behind in posting about the kids birthdays. Aidan’s was a bit impromptu where up until days before he had his celebration, he didn’t even know if he wanted one! Aidan has struggled off and on all year socially. With a grade of only about 15 kids, it’s often hard to figure out where you fit in when there aren’t really “groups”, just one big group.
There’s no popular kids, or nerdy kids, or sporty kids. They all hang out together. Yes, they split up into smaller groups when they are at recess and things like that, but they also rotate in a sense – if that makes sense at all? So maybe one day hanging out with these 3 kids and another day hanging out with a different 3 kids. It’s an interesting mix but has also been challenging for Aidan. He gets along with most, but forming that “best friend” friendship he’s been looking to achieve has been eluding him. I think he’s working too hard (I wonder who he gets that from?).
Anyways, he didn’t want a birthday party because he just wasn’t feeling celebratory in that way. It broke my heart to see him in any kind of pain. Interestingly, he wasn’t alone. A friend of his who happened to have a birthday a few days later also was feeling the same ambivalence about a party. After some chatting with his mom and talking to the boys, we decided on a joint party. To be held that weekend! Unfortunately, it was the weekend Josh was away with Liam at Legoland which meant they would not be able to be there.
The party was a great success. With only 6 boys, it was a nice fit and all the kids had a great time. They ended up going go-karting in the town next to us, Huizen. The go-karting place was pretty awesome with a fantastic indoor track. With birthday parties they close down the track to everyone else, so our 6 kids were the only ones racing. They did 3 races, each about 10 minutes long and they had a blast. You can see the first one here and the second one here. You could see their confidence levels rising with each race. At the end, they had a ceremony for the top 3 racers. All in all, the party was a great success and Aidan was really happy that he decided to do it.
In the end it was a fun birthday celebration, even if it was planned only a few days in advance and bonus that we’ve found a really cool go-karting place barely 15 mins from our house!
