A Much Needed Trip “Home”

It’s been a LONG year… I’m not exaggerating.  This year has kicked our asses 5 ways from Sunday.  And at the same time, this year flew by.  It’s hard to believe one year ago we left Barcelona and 11 months ago we touched down in the Netherlands as our new home.  Tomorrow we are headed home for almost 6 weeks (the kids ENTIRE summer vacation). I’m in packing and list checking mode and ready to rock n roll.  It’s hard to believe in less than 24 hours we’ll be on our way.  And bonus this year is we get to fly direct – something we couldn’t do from Barcelona.  A trip home AND saving close to 4-5 hours of travel – yay!!!

I need this break.  Badly.  I need to get out of here.  The last few weeks have been good – really good in fact.  But the last 40+ have not.  I always look forward to going home but this year, I’m really looking forward to taking a break, regrouping and then prepping myself for a more positive re-entry to the Netherlands come mid August.

We have a few things on our plates when we get there but overall I’m not doing much as far as plans.  So if you haven’t heard from me as you normally would have to schedule a breakfast, lunch, dinner, playdate with kids, etc – it’s not that I don’t want to see you, I am just trying (for once) to be as spontaneous as possible and eliminate the stress and anxiety that my annual visiting schedule causes me.  We’ll see how this goes – the idea of not having a set schedule (minus a few things that require travel) is feeling a bit freeing and yet at the same time, it is totally freaking me out.

We’ll say goodbye to our house on this trip.  There’s a lot of memories there but the time is right for us.  It’s sold and we pass papers in a few weeks when Josh is home.  That will also be a great part of our trip this year.  Josh has not been home with us since we moved almost 6 years ago and so he is coming in the middle of the trip the week before we take the kids up to camp in Maine.  So we are really looking forward to spending some time as a family at home for the first time in a very long time.

I’m looking forward to some quality time with my family.  With my past over scheduling, they have often taken the short end of the stick and this year I’m determined to change that.  There also new babies in the family that I can’t wait to snuggle – including our new niece!!

Liam is looking forward to going home.  Not only is he excited for some good old American shopping, but his BFF from Spain is going to camp with him in Maine!  Aidan, on the other hand, is not looking forward to it as much – he finds home to be boring.  I suspect he’s going to eat those words once we get there.  Regardless, we’re in countdown mode and can’t wait to be there tomorrow!!

So while I’m trying to be spontaneous with my plans, feel free to reach out via email, whatsapp or Facebook (I won’t have a phone number til at least later tomorrow) as I’d still love to see people.  I am excited for the chance to recharge for a bit so that when we return from this trip home to the US, I will be ready to tackle anything the Netherlands has to throw at me (and all I can hope is that it’s much kinder in year 2!)!

Knuffels en kussen,

Julie
