I was forwarding a post on Facebook yesterday morning that was originally from 1000 Places to See Before you Die.  It was about 20 travel truths to live by.  In my forward, I also added that it’s important to go outside what we would define as our top tier travel destinations.  That while Rome, London and Paris are all wonderful places to visit, it’s the 2nd and 3rd tier places that will change your life.

It’s only after exploring the majority of our top tier places – most of which were cities that eventually blended into one another, that we realized that taking the road less traveled in our lives also means taking that same path when it comes to where we chose to vacation.  And that has taken us to some very interesting places.  This week we will find ourselves in Istanbul and Cappadocia.  Last year we found ourselves in Tanzania.  Before that, Iceland.  And Croatia.  None of these places were ever locations we considered a must see, first tier destination.  In the end, they were some of the best trips we’ve ever taken.

So the lesson learned here – take a chance.  Go somewhere new.  Go somewhere less traveled.  London, Paris and Rome will always be there.  Try something different.  It doesn’t have to be in the middle of no where.  But somewhere perhaps slightly off the beaten path.  You never know what you might find!
