Spontaneous

Spontaneous is not usually a word that describes me.  I’m a planner.  But year after year of exhausting trips back to the US has taught me that planning out every moment of a trip is not always a good thing.  And oddly enough, most of the trips we take as a family have very little planning beyond travel arrangements so why I have always felt the need to schedule every moment of every day when we are home is beyond me.   Continue reading

Quick Trip to Boston!!

I don’t remember the last time Josh and I went to a wedding and this year we have THREE! Two of them are this month.  What’s fun (for me at least) is that this year will be the first time the boys have ever been to a wedding as well and they get to experience three different celebrations of love – what a great way to start off the year! Meeting Our Niece

For me, one of the biggest highlights of our entire 6 weeks at home was getting to meet our niece, Emma.  Until now, our kids have been the only grandchildren on both sides, so Josh and I were super excited to welcome Emma to our family this past January. Unfortunately living 4000 miles away can make meeting new family members a bit of a challenge. A Few Days in Portsmouth, NH (without kids)

While the kids are away…you get the picture.  It’s been a while since Josh and I were away just the two of us.  We normally try to do a long weekend every 3-4 months without kids as we think it’s important to have an existence beyond the boys as well, but the last 2 years have been challenging between Josh’s commuting back and forth to Amsterdam / Barcelona for 9 months and then his dislocated knee which had him out of commission for close to our first 6 months here. Family Reunion

We’ve been home for almost 2 weeks now, but as you can see, I’m still writing about our amazing trip back home this summer.  As I mentioned before, when Josh was in town, we only came off Cape a few times. The first was for a family reunion with my family.  It was the opportunity for the kids to see all of their cousins (they had seen a few but not all) along with their great aunts and uncles, and of course, their Papa. But what was interesting that it was actually the first time Josh met a lot of my family and we’ve been together over 20 years! How is that possible???? Continue reading

Visiting “Home” – Part 1

This year we got to travel home direct.  It was downright luxurious.  If there must be a positive to living in the Netherlands, I’m going with that.  Not having to change flights or wait around for our connection was amazing.  Wham! Bam! And we were there.  Ok, it wasn’t quite that fast as it was still almost 7 hours, but 7 is way better than 11.

Ready to head

Ready to head “home” (with Starbucks in hand)!

Bliss – 6 Weeks at Home in the US

It’s been more than 6 weeks and I’ve been pretty radio silent, but that’s because I’ve been too busy having a great time at home in the US with family and friends.  We just returned back this past weekend and while I debated writing while I was away, I just couldn’t find the right place to begin and to sort out my thoughts.  My email is full of notes to myself on various things that have happened over the last 6 weeks.  All of them wonderful. A Much Needed Trip “Home”

It’s been a LONG year… I’m not exaggerating.  This year has kicked our asses 5 ways from Sunday.  And at the same time, this year flew by.  It’s hard to believe one year ago we left Barcelona and 11 months ago we touched down in the Netherlands as our new home.  Tomorrow we are headed home for almost 6 weeks (the kids ENTIRE summer vacation). I’m in packing and list checking mode and ready to rock n roll.  It’s hard to believe in less than 24 hours we’ll be on our way.  And bonus this year is we get to fly direct – something we couldn’t do from Barcelona.  A trip home AND saving close to 4-5 hours of travel – yay!!!   Continue reading

Best Friends Together Again at Legoland Germany

So I’m a bit far behind in my blogging apparently.  Liam’s birthday was back in early May and he went to Legoland about a month ago as well.  You probably remember the happy dance Liam performed on his birthday when he found out he was meeting up with his BFF at Legoland right?  If not, you can see it here.  Well the time has come and gone and he and Josh headed off to Germany to meet up with Liam’s best friend Quinn and his dad.   Continue reading

Happiness Through a Child’s Eyes

This weekend I remembered what it means to be happy and seeing it through my children’s eyes made me realize that it’s not something all that complicated and really not all that hard to achieve.  All you need is really great friends and you’ll be amazed at how happy you can be.  A touch of beautiful weather doesn’t hurt either 😉 While we were in Barcelona, our pace was relaxed.  We the majority of our time with friends.  My friends did everything to try to help make things easier for us – helping to shuttle the kids to and from playdates and sleepovers and helping to organize lunches, etc.  Without them, I couldn’t have done it – we had to be in too many places at once.  And for that, I thank each and every one of you.
