Diergaarde Blijdorp (Rotterdam Zoo)

In our attempt to start doing more exploring, a few weekends ago we headed west… to Rotterdam.  My initial plan was a spontaneous trip to Berlin, however, it turns out that Berlin is still 6 hours by train, so that took a little of the spontaneity out of that one.  Then I thought perhaps Antwerp, Belgium since that’s less than 2 hours drive.  But it was going to be cold out and who wants to wander around a city in the freezing cold?  In the end, since we had one sick child on board, we opted for the zoo – feeling it would be low key and easy on a cold spring day.   Continue reading

When Vacations Collide

One of my closest friend’s moved to New York years ago.  It’s been so many years that I can’t remember if it was before or after I had Aidan.  But thankfully with technology we are able to keep in regular tough.  We facebook, we whatsapp (if you don’t have whatsapp, you need to get it), and we email… usually at least once a week.  Continue reading

A Quick Weekend in Lisbon, Portugal

The kids had a long weekend this weekend due to parent/teacher conferences so we decided to take the opportunity to start our crazy 6 months of travel in Lisbon, Portugal. Just a short 1 1/2 hour flight from Barcelona, it was easy to get to and we knew we could see a lot in just 2 1/2 days.  As I type this out I realized too late that I probably should have split this into at least two entries so I apologize in advance as this is a long one!!  But long with pictures, not words, I promise!

USA USA USA!!! It’s time to go home (to visit)!

The time has come for the kids and I to make our first visit home in almost 8 months.  It was my first time flying with just myself and the kids and I was a little anxious about it but the kids did amazing.  I will admit that in hindsight I planned this flight poorly – I should have paid the extra $120 to do the shorter flight (by 4 hours!) but hey hindsight is 20/20 right?  But given the 12 hrs each way that we had committed to, the kids did amazing – on the plane. L’Estartit, Costa Brava Vacation (Day 4) – Sigean Africaine Reserve, France

DAY 4

Today was the day we travelled to France. It really is cool knowing how close it is to get to – like driving to Maine…but it’s France!! We decided on the Sigean Africaine Reserve (not based on the rhino picture I assure you…) as a destination http://www.reserveafricainesigean.fr/. Our “trusty” GPS told us that we had just under 2 hours to go and off we went! Continue reading

Surviving Semana Blanca (or how to get thru February Vacation and live to tell the tale)

This week was February vacation for Aidan. At home I would have some options for him. A camp at the Y, friends in the neighborhood, etc etc. Here right now, I have pretty much nothing but we are going to make the best of what we’ve got this week. We are going to go to the aquarium one day and the zoo another. That leaves 3 days of what to do.  Thankfully the weather was just gorgeous this week – pretty much every day hit 60 with at least partial sun.  Continue reading

Barcelona Zoo (take 2) and the Best Day so Far…

Friday was an absolutely gorgeous day in Barcelona.  I’m sorry to rub it in to all my New England friends who are suffering in subzero temps and lots and lots of snow.  But I think it made it to 60 here on Fri (and Sat).  Wanting to take full advantage of the beautiful weather, Liam and I set out on another exploration.  Today’s goal – the Arc de Triomf (for a little history check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arc_de_Triomf) and the Parc de la Ciutadella (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parc_de_la_Ciutadella) which also happens to abut the zoo we went to earlier in the week.  We essentially walked the entire length of Passeig Sant Joan – which runs north to south in the city and we pick up just a few blocks from our flat.

The Barcelona Zoo

On Wednesday I decided that it was time for Liam and I to have another activity that was not grocery store or food related as most of our daily trips tend to be.  In our month here, I feel like I’ve only taken him on 2 fun trips – to Parc Guell and to the beach.  We have 5 days a week together just the two of us and I had promised him and myself with this move that I would spend better quality time with him.  And while I have spent better quality time, he may not see it that way when all I do is drag him around.  Continue reading
